Discrimination & Legal Information
Gender identity discrimination occurs when you are denied services, opportunities, equal access, or subjected to a hostile work environment
because you are transgender, intersex, and/or genderqueer. Sometimes, a transgender person will be discriminated against because
others believe you to be lesbian, gay, or bisexual. It can occur on its own or in combination with discrimination based on other
characteristics such as race, sexual orientation, disability, etc. California Law prohibits discrimination because of: ‘‘Race, religious creed, color, national origin, ancestry, physical disability, mental disability, medical condition, marital status,
sex, age, or sexual orientation’’ and includes a perception that the person has any of those characteristics or that the person is
associated with a person who has, or is perceived to have, any of those characteristics.
